stethoscope sock project

Supplies Needed:

fabric* (washed & ironed)

5" of 1/4" baby elastic

button

safety pin

sewing machine with buttonhole capabilities

scissors or rotary cutter

ruler or measuring tape

*Calculate the size of fabric you will need by measuring the length of your stethoscope from the chest piece to the stem.  Add 10" to the measured length.  Your fabric measurement is your calculated length x 5.5".   Example:: My stethoscope is 18" so I had a piece of fabric 28" x 5.5".

Fold each short end 1/4" down and straight stitch.  Next, fold down again 1/2" and straight stitch so that a 'tube' is made (see below picture).

On the end that will be the top of your stethoscope, sew a buttonhole in the very center about 1/4" down from the top.

Next, using your safety pin, thread elastic through the tube on the bottom end of your sock.  Overlap elastic 1" and sew together.  Now, fold your fabric lengthwise, right sides together and stitch closed 1/4" from raw edge.  I like to zig-zag stitch the raw edge once since I don't have a serger.  Sew a button on the wrong side of fabric at the seam (see above).  Finally, turn sock inside out and 'thread' onto your stethoscope!

I'm more than happy to share this project with you and hope that you enjoy the process of creating!  If you liked this project leave me a comment!  Thanks so much~ Susannah

I love your design! I don't know how to sew but I bought one of those handheld sewing machine, and i think i can do this with that. As for the button hole, i think i can somehow improvise. I'm open to any suggestion.

Thank you for putting together a beautiful tutorial! I am making several for my sister-in-law now. I modified a bit by sewing ribbon to the top (I despise button-holes - my machine hates me!). She will love these!
