improv placemats

We're 90% moved into our new place. The 10% is still packed in boxes but I couldn't help starting these improv blocks. They will be everyday placemats to go with our new kitchen table. I have really enjoyed making them but improv piecing can be tricky. You can't just throw a bunch of scraps together and let it ride...you have to plan and think and re-arrange...I'll admit it can be tiresome!
I went out yesterday after a talk with Summer about sketching and bought a sketch book...just a wire bound one for $3.87 at Wal-Mart. I think one of my 2012 goals will be to sketch my ideas out before jumping into a project blind (like I so often do). A little planning never hurt, right!? I've been inspired to make a quilt based on a pillow I saw on a sitcom last week. I sketched out the basic idea and am taking a break today from the placemats to work on it. What are you working on this week?
My quilt giveaway is still up and running, don't forget to check it out and sign up!
